Choosing A Hot water heater
With the demand for water heaters, manufacturers provide various specifications: the energy input (Btu/hour for gas, kilowatts [kW] for electric), the temperature rise achievable at the rated flow, the flow rate at the listed temperature rise, and so on.
In comparing different models, be aware that you are not always looking at direct comparisons, especially with temperature rise and flow rate.
For example, while one model might list the flow rate at a 100°F temperature rise, another might list the flow rate at 70°F.
Until there are industry-standard ratings for temperature rise and flow rates, it will be difficult to compare the performance of products from different companies. Some companies are beginning to publish energy factor ratings for these products. This information should make for easier comparisons.

tankless water heaters
Why choose A Tankless Water Heater?
Tankless water heaters are also known as on demand water heaters. These units make sense for homeowners for several reasons. They conserve energy, save money, and deliver hot water to you instantaneously. In vacation or second homes they can be especially desirable.
Tankless water heaters work differently than a standard hot water tank. Tankless systems heat water by activating a set of coils that become hot when the unit is turned on. As the water passes over the coils, it is heated, delivering hot water to you with little to no wait. The temperature set on the control determines how hot the coils become, how quickly the water moves across the coils, and how hot the water will be when it comes out of the tap.
Advantages to Tankless Water Heaters
Here are some of the main reasons why tankless water heaters make sense as opposed to the traditional hot water tank:
1. Energy conservation, Earth FRIENDLY, green
With reduced energy usage, reduced water consumption, less sewage, and an on demand system, tankless water heaters are a green alternative to hot water tanks. They conserve energy by only heating the amount of water needed at a given moment.
The traditional water heater has a tank that is filled with constantly heated water. It wastes energy by holding the temperature of water that is not currently in use.
A tankless, however, is not constantly running and heating. It heats water as it is consumed and passes through the unit. It only uses enough energy to heat the amount of water you require in the moment. This way, you receive instant hot water with minimal energy usage and minimal waste.
2. Fast and Easy Access to Hot Water
Tankless water heaters eliminate the long wait for heat of the traditional hot water tank.
When a tank runs out of water, you have to wait while the many gallons of water are heated to the desired temperature. But with a tankless water heater, water is being heated the moment you turn the faucet. So hot water is delivered to you within seconds and by your demand.
4. Great for Vacation and Second Homes
Tankless water heaters are perfect for vacation and second homes that are not constantly occupied. They can be left alone for extended periods with no stress involved.
While you are not staying in a home, it is always wise to turn off any appliances and utilities that are not in use. This conserves energy, saves money and protects your property from potential hazards. Tankless water heaters make this process much easier.
Since a tankless unit only runs when hot water is being used, it can be left on with no waste or risk and no worries. It also heats water instantly, so you won’t have to wait for water to warm when you return.
Use of tankless systems in second homes eliminates risks of water damage. Traditional hot water tanks have risk of leaking, which can lead to expensive damage repairs, especially when left unattended. A tankless water heater has no risk of leaking a full tank of water and causing harm.
